Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, recently shared his vision for new cryptocurrency applications in prediction markets following the rise of Polymarket. He categorizes innovations in this field under a broad term he calls “info finance.”
Definition of Info Finance
According to Buterin, info finance begins with identifying an interesting fact and involves consciously designing markets to best reveal this information. This approach can be applied in various domains beyond prediction markets, including social media, science, news, and governance.
Current applications of info finance include projects in advertising, personal tokens, scientific peer reviews, and public goods funding. Buterin noted that these projects are still in the conceptual phase and are expected to expand in the future.
Future Expectations
Buterin emphasized that the current decade presents a unique opportunity for info finance. He identified three main reasons for this opportunity: resolving trust issues, using scalable blockchains, and increased market participation of artificial intelligences.
He further explained that AI facilitates market participation, allowing for the establishment of effective markets even on smaller-scale questions. As a result, market volumes can rapidly increase on specific topics.
With the recent decrease in transaction fees, the feasibility of these ideas has increased. Buterin stated that these developments are critical in realizing the potential of info finance.
Info finance offers innovative solutions across various sectors by providing broader methods for information gathering and evaluation. This approach creates significant opportunities for restoring trust and improving information-based decision-making processes.
